Skilled Immigrant Program
The Cause
Howard Community College serves a vibrant community of immigrants who are eager to contribute to Maryland’s workforce. However, many are highly educated but underemployed. This "brain waste” not only negatively affects these individuals, locking them into low-skilled and low-wage jobs, but it also impacts the financial health of the community.
In response, HCC’s English Language Center offers the Skilled Immigrant Program, designed to help international professionals overcome cultural barriers and develop the skills needed to navigate the U.S. job market and restart their careers. The program supports participants in building a professional network, developing interview skills, creating a career action plan and navigating the U.S. workplace. Graduates have been hired for high-skilled careers by M&T Bank, Dell Technologies, Howard Tech Advisors, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the International Rescue Committee, and Carroll Fuel. Community business support is essential to deliver this program which provides students free access to the program’s courses and student support services.
Volunteer Needs
- Guest Speakers - Students benefit greatly from the expertise of professionals and hearing the inspiring stories of others who have faced similar challenges. Share your story to inspire students.
- Interviewers - The instructor and HCC’s career services staff work with the students to develop effective interviewing skills. Professionals from the “real world” volunteer to provide practice interviews for the students during planned sessions.
- Mentors - Professionals in field connect with students interested in that career area. Mentors meet with the students twice during the course of the program.
