The Arts Thrive at Howard Community College
COLUMBIA, MD – Howard Community College (HCC) highlights student, alumni, and faculty excellence with the Dance Showcase, November 10 and 11, a Music Faculty Concert on November 11, and a twist on the Euripides Greek classic, “Medea,” November 16 through 19. All productions will be at HCC’s Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center.
Dance Showcase
The Howard Community College dance program is excited to present the Fall 2023 Dance Showcase in the Smith Theatre on November 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. The performance features an eclectic mix of artistic visions choreographed and performed by students, alumni, faculty, and guest artists.
Student choreographer Cara Kerrebrock created a piece she hopes will uplift the audience. “I just completed a two-and-a-half-year fight against cancer,” she shares. “I love life, and dancing makes me feel alive! Daft Punk is my favorite music to dance to. “For the Love of Life, Dance, and Robots” is an upbeat piece that serves as a love letter to Daft Punk, thanking them for the music that has been the soundtrack to some of the best moments in my life. I want to share some of my memories with the audience in hopes that they will think of their own happy times.”
Performances will take place on Friday, November 10 and Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 7 p.m. on both nights. The opening night performance will be followed by a talk-back as well as a post-show reception, featuring food and beverage provided by students from HCC’s culinary program. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students, seniors, and the military. Recommended for all ages. For more information, visit www.howardcc.edu/danceconcerts.
“Medea” by Euripides
From November 16 through 19, audiences are invited to experience a fresh take on a classic. “Our Medea will be a unique experience for a classical Greek play,” offered Jenny Male, coordinator for the theatre program and the director of this production. “The language in the play has been adapted for modern audiences, and the production will include Randai movement accompanied by two percussionists. It will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience classical Greek drama blended with an Indonesian style of storytelling.”
Performances of “Medea” will take place in the Rouse Company Foundation Studio Theatre on November 16, 17, and 18 at 7:30 p.m., with 2:30 p.m. matinees on November 17 and 19. An opening night reception is planned for Thursday, November 16. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students, seniors, and the military. Recommended for ages 13+. Concessions prepared by students from HCC’s culinary program will be available for sale prior to performances Friday through Sunday. For more information, visit www.howardcc.edu/studenttheatre.
