College Policy Number/Title:
Howard Community College faculty focus on achieving instructional excellence by using effective evidence-based teaching practices designed to promote learner success. An effective teacher: sets clear course goals and learning objectives that encourage intellectual growth; promotes student accountability through active learning strategies in and out of the classroom; provides meaningful, frequent, and prompt feedback; guides students to be self-directed lifelong learners; plans learning activities that encourage long term learning retention; and assists students with connecting new knowledge to prior knowledge and its application. Additionally, an effective teacher creates a learning environment that encourages belonging through inclusive practices that promote student self-motivation, designs or applies formative and summative qualitative or quantitative assessments that provide appropriate document evidence of student learning, and reflects on teaching for continuous improvement.
