Student Email Policy - 50.09
College Procedure Number/Title:
Howard Community College (HCC) has established college-issued electronic mail (email) accounts as an official means for communicating with students. Official communications are intended to meet the academic and administrative needs of the college. Only college-issued email accounts will be used in official electronic correspondence with students. In official responses, students are required to use their HCC email when corresponding with college offices, faculty, or staff.
The college expects that students read and respond to correspondence in a frequent and consistent manner. Students are expected to check their official college email routinely, or as directed, in order to stay current with college communications. The college expects students to regularly manage and process email correspondence in their inbox. A student's failure to read and respond to college communications in a timely manner does not absolve that student from knowing and complying with the content of such communications.
College email may be used for incidental personal purposes provided that such use does not:
- Violate this policy, any applicable college policies or procedures, or the student code of conduct.
- Promote personal gain or illegal activities.
- Transmit any inappropriate material.
- Interfere with college email services.
Users may choose to have their HCC email redirected to another email service provider at their own risk. The college will not be responsible for email services provided by external organizations. It is recommended that the college email only be used for college purposes and not as a personal email account.
There is no expectation of privacy with regard to email sent or received from college email accounts or from college computers.
Failure to comply with policies and procedures may result in loss of college computing privileges, disciplinary action, and/or legal action.
