
President Emeritus Procedure – 61.25.01
College Policy Number/Title
Howard Community College (HCC) has established the president emeritus status to recognize retired or retiring college presidents who provided outstanding and distinguished service to the college and served a significant portion of their career at the college. “Distinguished service” is defined as service that goes beyond the normal duties and responsibilities of the appointment, and which has had an extraordinary impact on the college and the broader community.
Criteria
The following criteria will be used as the basis for recommendation to president emeritus rank for a retiring or retired president:
- Served as college president for at least 10 years.
- Demonstrated exceptional commitment and contributions to the college.
- Exemplified the highest standards of personal and professional integrity, civic responsibility, vision, and leadership.
- Recognized as having contributed significantly to the quality and growth of HCC as a whole.
- Made substantial contributions to the community.
Procedures
A member of the board of trustees may nominate a retiring or retired college president as President Emeritus. This designation must be approved by the board of trustees.
The title of President Emeritus may be awarded posthumously.
Privileges
In addition to the benefits and privileges received by all retired faculty and staff, an HCC president granted emeritus status will also receive:
- The option to include this designation in appropriate college publications and/or the college website;
- Use of the title “President Emeritus” in community and professional activities or in any college advocacy efforts requested by the current president;
- Invitations to appropriate college events and activities; and
- The option to participate in commencement, inaugurations, installations, and other special college events.
The title of President Emeritus confers no remuneration, rights to employment, or benefits in addition to those provided above. Presidents Emeriti do not exercise any of the authority or administrative functions associated with holding a faculty or staff position at the college unless they are doing so in the capacity of another concurrently held position at HCC (such as Professor).
The board of trustees retains the authority to withdraw a President Emeritus title at its discretion, as it deems necessary and appropriate.
