
Staff Emeritus Procedure – 61.25.03
College Policy Number/Title
Howard Community College (HCC) has established the Staff Emeritus status to recognize retired or retiring staff members who have made outstanding contributions to Howard Community College.
Criteria
The following criteria will be used as the basis for recommendation to staff emeritus rank for retiring staff:
- Emeritus status can only be granted on retired college employees or those retiring as of June 30 of the current academic year.
- The staff member has served 20 continuous years as an employee of Howard Community College.
- The staff member is recognized by peers and supervisors as having made an outstanding contribution to Howard Community College.
- The staff member is recognized as having contributed significantly to the quality of the college as a whole with substantial contributions to college committees or teams or to the Howard County community.
Procedures
- A person retiring from HCC submits a request for staff emeritus status to the office of human resources.
- The office of human resources verifies the number of years of employment, the individual’s service on committees or teams during employment, and the employee’s most recent title.
- The office of human resources forwards the nominations to the nomination committee for consideration. The committee is chaired by the chief of staff and is comprised of a representative from human resources, teaching and learning, student success, and information technology.
- The committee considers each nomination and supporting materials. If the committee supports a nomination the recommendations are forwarded to the president for consideration.
- If the president supports a nomination, the nomination is forwarded to the board of trustees for consideration. The board of trustees bestows the rank of staff emeritus.
- Upon board approval, Emeritus will be added to the last title held by the person.
The title of Staff Emeritus may be awarded posthumously.
Privileges
An employee approved as Staff Emeritus by the board of trustees will have the privileges listed below in addition to the privileges afforded to all retirees. The president approves Staff Emeritus privileges upon request.
- Continued listing in the catalog with rank of Emeritus.
- Tuition waiver for any credit and noncredit courses.
- Standing invitation to participate in such institutional functions as Commencement, dedications, etc.
- Employee rates for institutionally sponsored events such as plays, film series, and trips.
The board of trustees retains the authority to withdraw a Staff Emeritus title at its discretion, as it deems necessary and appropriate.
