Teaching Across Cultures: Education and Culture in Ecuador
This study abroad program offers HCC students the opportunity to explore Ecuador's rich culture, natural beauty, and educational system while earning college credit. In partnership with Universidad de Cuenca, students begin with a tour of Quito before heading to Cuenca—a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its colonial charm and vibrant cultural scene. Participants will study Spanish and engage in classroom observations during school visits as they gain insight into Ecuador's education system. Evening activities include local cuisine, music, and festivals. After the 10-day trip, students complete online coursework for credit in EDUC-110. overview

Ancient Odyssey Across Greece
Explore Greece's rich history, vibrant culture, and beautiful landscapes this summer. The program will begin with four days of intensive lectures at HCC. In Greece, students will visit some of the most important historical sites in the world, such as the Parthenon, Ancient Agora, Temple of Poseidon, Theater of Epidaurus, and Ancient Mycenae. You will experience cultural events like a dinner with Greek music, a tour of Athens's central food market, and lunch at an olive grove. Students will view the picturesque coast of Cape Sounion, the beaches of Aegina, and the seaside fortresses of Nafplio. Students will see priceless historical objects while visiting the National Archaeological Museum. Participants will stay in hotels in Athens and Nafplio, and all participants must be able to walk up to eight miles per day over uneven ground in hot temperatures.
Please note that participants should be prepared to walk up to ten miles per day over uneven terrain in temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Language and Culture of Taiwan
Travel to Kaohsiung for an exciting two-week program on the language and cultures of Taiwan. The program will be hosted by National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) in the southern coastal city of Kaohsiung. The NSYSU campus is modern and in a beautiful location between coastal mountains and a beach, all in one of Taiwan's largest cities and less than two hours by bullet train from Taipei. Participants will prepare for the study abroad experience with an overview of Taiwanese history and culture prior to departure. At NSYSU, participants will take Chinese language classes each morning and engage in cultural activities and excursions in the afternoons and on the weekends. Excursions will include visits to sites in and around Kaohsiung such as the Pier 2 Art Center, Ruifeng Night Market, Lianchitan Scenic Area, Fo Gong Shan Buddha Museum, and Qijin Island. Outside of Kaohsiung, participants will visit sites in Taipei and Tainan and experience regional variations in Taiwanese culture. No prior Chinese language study is required. Participants will be placed in courses that suit their needs, from beginner to intermediate to advanced. Participants from HCC will be part of a program with students from other institutions in the United States and around the world. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will earn credit at HCC for HUMN 223, Cultures of Asia, and receive a language certificate from NSYSU.
Criminal Justice-East of the Horizon
Embark on a journey to Nairobi, Kenya considered the foremost geopolitical power of Africa and the Indo-Pacific. You can earn college credit while exploring the intersection of International Policing, Criminology, and Geopolitics in the Cradle of Mankind. This program is a collaboration with Africa’s premier Social Science and Criminological Institute-United States International University (USIU)-Africa, Nairobi, Kenya. Your International Policing experience consists of a basic lesson in Swahili, attending Comparative Criminal Justice courses at USIU, and visiting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. You’ll apply criminological concepts when visiting Kimati Prison, Langata Women’s Prison Justice Center, and the Dedan Kimathi Memorial. Lastly, you’ll gain an understanding of Kenya’s global geopolitical position with a Intercultural Competence Workshop and outings to Independent Medico-Legal Unit; Nairobi City; Nairobi National Park; The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – Elephant Orphanage; Bomas of Kenya; the Giraffe Center; and Kazuri Bead Factory.
Students will stay in three-star hotel and should be prepared to walk up to ten miles per day over uneven terrain in temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit with additional visits to the Maasai Cultural Center and Zebra Plains Mara Camp Game Drive.
