Tutoring Policies and Guidelines
The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) has established the following policies and guidelines to ensure that the tutoring experience is positive and productive for every student.
- Tutoring services are for currently enrolled Howard Community College students. This includes dual enrolled students, and students preparing to take a placement test for a credit class.
- To sign up for tutoring in any modality, students must be enrolled in an HCC course to receive tutoring for that course/subject.
- For in-person services:
- All tutoring sessions are 45–50 minutes in length.
- All students are required to sign in and out electronically at the kiosks located inside and outside of ACE using their student ID.
- Students with appointments will be given preference over walk ins. Use our TracCloud scheduling system to book in-person (and virtual) tutoring appointments.
- Frequency: Students may schedule up to three tutoring sessions per week (no back-to-back appointments).
- Arrive on time: If a student is more than 15 minutes late, we may need to offer the spot to another student, and it will count as a missed session.
- Cancellations: If a student needs to cancel a session, they must notify ACE with at least one hour advanced notice. Cancel by emailing or calling 443-518-1320. Cancellations made less than one hour of the scheduled session time will be marked as "Late Cancels."
- No-shows and Late Cancels: After three missed sessions (no-shows or late cancels), your ability to book new appointments will pause for three weeks.
-
- Students should come to their tutoring session prepared with notes, textbooks, and questions.
- Only beverages in spill-proof containers are allowed.
- Students are required to keep noise levels to a minimum. All cell phones must be put on vibrate before entering ACE.
- Student parents, or adults responsible for children, are encouraged to find appropriate care for their children during tutoring sessions.
- All phone calls should be answered outside of ACE.
- Any type of disruptive behavior is not permitted in the Academic Center for Excellence. This includes, but is not limited to, talking loudly, listening to music without headphones, and any behavior that disturbs others.
- All computers at ACE should be used for academic purposes only. Playing video games, and surfing on social network platforms (unless part of an assignment) and entertainment websites on ACE computers is not allowed.
