Assistive Technology
Assistive technology refers to adaptive devices that enable people with disabilities to more independently navigate their daily tasks. In the college setting, assistive technology may support needs in the areas of testing, reading, and more.
Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act defines assistive technology as, "Any item, piece of equipment, or system, whether acquired commercially, modified or customized that is commonly used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities."
After talking with your DSS counselor and determining what accommodations are needed, eligible students will schedule an appointment with the Assistive Technology Specialist to arrange for training on the appropriate, available technology.
On campus, Assistive Technology support can be found in Rouse Company Foundation Room 325 (8:30am-5pm) and Clark Library Room 203 (Library business hours may vary).
The following programs are available on the Assistive Technology computers:
- Kurzweil 3000
- JAWS
- ZoomText
- NVDA
- CCTV Document Magnification
- Larger Print Computer Keyboard
