English as a Second Language (ESL)
Credit Classes for Multilingual English Learners (MEL)
At HCC, we refer to English as a Second Language (ESL) learners as Multilingual English (MEL) learners and provide the support needed to build English proficiency and succeed in college-level courses.
Credit* MEL classes build the academic English skills needed for college-level coursework while allowing students to earn credits toward a degree. They can be taken alongside other college-level classes. Some courses, like ENGL-109 and INFO-100, count as Gen Ed credits for graduation.

Getting Started with MEL/ESL Credit Classes
Students begin by taking a placement test that measures their academic reading and writing skills. Based on their results, they are placed in the appropriate MEL/ESL English courses.
Intermediate Level:
- ENGL-083: Intermediate Academic Reading
- ENGL-084: Intermediate Academic Writing
Advanced Level:
- ENGL-085: Academic Advanced Oral Communication (Students with native-like oral communication skills may be exempt from ENGL-085 by passing the Oral Language Assessment (OLA).)
- ENGL-109: Advanced Academic English
- INFO-100E: Information Literacy for ESL Students
College Level:
- ENGL-121E: College Composition (Designed for MEL students and feature smaller class sizes, ESL-qualified faculty, and lab instructors.)
Opportunities to Streamline Your ESL/MEL Progress
Students with qualifying placement scores may be eligible for combined courses that allow them to complete MEL requirements more quickly. Talk with an advisor about eligibility and enrollment.
Support Services for MEL/ESL Students
HCC offers several support services for MEL learners, including the Language Lab, which provides coaching in oral communication, and ACE WELL, which offers writing support throughout every stage of the writing process.
